πΈ Athletes compete across track and field events during the Athletics National Championship at the National Stadium in Honiara
The Athletics National Championship officially got underway at the National Stadium in Honiara today, Monday 28 September, bringing together athletes from Honiara clubs and several provinces for three days of competition.
Hosted by Athletics Solomon, the championship runs from 28β30 September 2026 and provides an important opportunity to identify athletes who could form part of the Solomon Islands squad preparing for the 2027 Pacific Games in Tahiti, while also providing competition experience ahead of other upcoming regional events.
Athletics Solomon President Michael Kuali said the championship marks the beginning of a series of trials leading into preparations for the 2027 Pacific Games in Tahiti, with further time trials planned for later this year and early next year.
βThis competition is very important. It is to scout any possible athletes and select them to start training for the upcoming Tahiti Pacific Games,β said Kuali.
Kuali said Athletics Solomon is pleased to have athletes participating from Western, Malaita, Guadalcanal and Central Islands provinces, alongside clubs from Honiara.
βWe will look forward for some good results, whereby we can pick up athletes,β said Kuali.
Kuali also acknowledged the support of the National Sports Council (NSC), the National Olympic Committee of Solomon Islands (NOCSI) and other stakeholders supporting the championship.
βThank you to NSC for the continuous collaboration and assistance and for hosting this championship,β said Kuali.
